Commerce Lady Tigers make school history

COMMERCE — As the final batter was called out in a 5-1 victory over Edgewood on April 20, head coach Jeff Davidson’s High School Softball team secured its first District Championship in school history.

The Lady Tigers have made big strides in the two years that Davidson has been head coach. The year before he came the team was winless in district, and, last year, they came in third in district.

This year, the Lady Tigers went 12-2 in district, with an impressive 25-4 overall record.

With a good mix of power-hitters and quick runners, Davidson said he has a very well-rounded team.

“We have a bunch of quick girls that we utilize their strengths,” he said. “Baserunning has been our strength.”

A good team begins with good pitching and catching, and according to Davidson, pitchers Jordyn Sharp and Chaney Moreland, and catcher Rebekah Cooper are top-notch.

Davidson also listed 1B Taite McBee and SS Dayhana Essix as key power-hitters in the lineup.

Davidson said the team has earned every one of their 25 wins.

“We’ve had to work for them,” he said, adding that he thinks the playoffs are very wide-open. “We have a lot of girls that play multiple sports, so we really have to work at it to stay ahead.”

The tie-breaker that clinched the District Championship against Edgewood was the most important game of the season so far, Davidson said.

“We stepped up,” he said. “Our girls played very well.”

The Lady Tigers play a warm up game in Commerce against Sam Rayburn High School April 30 at 6 p.m.

Depending on which team wins, the Lady Tigers will play Chisum or Hughes Springs on May 3 or 4.
