Lions hold off Harding 2-1 for victory in home opener

COMMERCE — Anitra Wright scored with less than two minutes before the halftime break and the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer squad (2-1) was able to make it hold up to beat Harding in the home opener at Lion Soccer Field 2-1 on Sept. 13.

Harding wasted little time getting on the board. Jenna Taylor got a feed from Audrey Adkison behind the Lion defense at the top of the 18-yard box and beat goalkeeper Callie Ballard to near right post to give the Lady Bison a lead in the sixth minute.

After a foul on Harding, Savannah Henderson stood over a free kick from at least 20 yards and beat the goalkeeper to the left post to tie the score at one in the tenth minute. The goal was Henderson’s first as a Lion.

“I was really nervous and I was pretty far out. I was also not used to [right] side. I looked to back to see if [Coach Piper] wanted me to shoot or not because I am just a freshmen. I decided it was best if I could just get it on frame,” Henderson said on her first career goal.

After two Harding corner kicks in the 41st and 42nd minutes, Wright took a feed from Taylor Lambeth on the left side and put shot in the back of the net for her second of the season just before the end of the half.

In the second the Lions had plenty of chances to add to lead thanks to  eight corner kicks but were unable to get another one on the board.

“I am more concerned with our 11 corners; we have to be a set piece team. We have the players and the service. I am more concerned with that than the 20 shots we had [tonight],” coach Neil Piper said.

The Lion defense with the help of Catie Hyde, Laura Heron, Vicky Back and Wright in the second half held the Lady Bison to only two shots in the second half and three overall for the game. The defense has only given up two goals through the first three games of the season.

The Lions hosted Dallas Baptist on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Lion Soccer Field and will travel to Ouachita Baptist on Sept. 22.
