Volleyball squad secures Bi-District Championship

Headed to Mount Pleasant to take on Queen City

COMMERCE — The Commerce High School varsity volleyball squad defeated Palmer High School on Nov. 5 to earn their second straight Bi-District Championship.

The Lady Tigers dropped a warm-up game to Celina on Nov. 1 in three sets, but the game helped the team get ready for the playoffs according to head coach Sarah Fielden.

“We played with them well and our defense really stepped up against a hard-hitting group of volleyball players,” she said. “We hadn’t seen anyone hit the ball like that in a long time, so it really helped prepare us for the playoffs.”

The Lady Tigers took on Palmer at Wills Point, defeating them in five hard-fought sets 16-25, 25-17, 25-16, 17-25, 15-9.

“We really started out slowly in the first set and played very timid,” Fielden said. “We were making a lot of passing and hitting errors and just couldn’t connect on much.”

Commerce turned things around, thanks to the leadership of Taite McBee, Bailee Mulcahy and Courtney McCloney. Logan Talley led the Lady Tigers in assists, and Jordyn Sharp and Riley Davidson led the team with seven aces each.

“On the back line, Laney and Riely Davidson were picking up most of the hits Palmer forced over the net,” Fielden said.

The Lady Tigers will travel to Mount Pleasant on Nov. 9 to take on Queen City in the area round of the playoffs, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

“I’m really proud of the way the girls fought [on Nov. 5] to push on to the next round of playoffs,” Fielden said. “I look forward to getting int the gym to practice the remainder of the week and face Queen City.”

Fielden said that the Lady Tigers will have to adjust to Queen City’s defense, a scheme they haven’t played against much this year.

“They have some size, so we will have to move quickly and work fast offensively,” she said. “We know what weneed to do. We just have to step out on the court and play together for those 25 points.”
