Green, McMahan pace women’s golf at Hawks Creek Invitational

COMMERCE — Behind solid opening rounds from seniors Haley Green and Chantry McMahan, A&M-Commerce opened up the 2013-14 season strong, shooting a 20-over 308 and sitting fifth after 18 holes at the Texas Wesleyan Hawks Creek Invitational.

Green sits tied for eighth in the individual standings after carding a 2-over 74, one stroke off her career-low. She recovered from a 3-over 39 over the opening nine holes to fire a 1-unde 35 over the back nine. Green leads fellow senior Chantry McMahan by one shot after she posted a 3-over 75, matching Green’s 1-under 35 over the final nine holes.

Freshman Zoey Daneshfar also had an impressive showing in her first collegiate round, posting a 1-over the front nine before settling in at 6-over 78, tied for 18th overall. Fellow freshman Emily Taylor sits two strokes back with a 9-over 81 while senior Chelsea McCoy rounded out the Lion scorecard with an 11-over 83. Sophomore Ali Leasor also carded a 9-over 81 competing as a medalist.

A&M-Commerce sits in prime position to make a run up the leaderboard as the Lions hold a 12-shot advantage over sixth-place Western Texas C.C. (32-over 320). A&M-Commerce enters Tuesday’s final round just two shots back of fourth-place Northwood (18-over 306) and is eight strokes behind third-place Cameron (12-over 300).

Oklahoma Christian holds the opening round lead with a 9-over 297, leading second-place Incarnate Word (11-over 299) by just two strokes. With just 11 shots separating the first-place Eagles and the fifth-place Lions, Tuesday’s final round is setting itself up for an exciting finish.

The final 18 holes gets underway Tuesday morning as A&M-Commerce will be teamed up with Northwood and Western Texas C.C. in the final round pairings. Full results will be posted as they become available at
