The Commerce High School boys’ basketball team started 2013 off on a high note, winning two straight after a Jan. 3 loss to Edgewood.
The Tigers managed only 41 points against the Bulldogs. The rebounded with a close 44-42 win over Alba-Golden on Jan. 5, led by 16 points from senior Kavrin Massey and 11 points from senior Buck Wilson. Commerce relied on a strong defensive effort in the third quarter, where they held the Panthers to only five points, for the victory.
Another close win over Lone Oak followed on Jan. 8. Massey again led the Tigers with 17 points in their 57-55 victory, with Wilson adding 15 and freshman Trey Smith contributing 10 points. The Tigers will travel to Como-Pickton to take on the Eagles on Jan. 11. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Tigers recorded a three game winning streak, defeating Grand Saline 58-26, Quitman 63-37 and Edgewood in overtime 65-62.
Senior Kaci Harrison led the Lady Tigers with 16 points against Grand Saline; senior Mouer Kelsey added 11. Against Quitman, Harrison led Commerce again with 19 points. Junior Taite McBee had 16 points and freshman Jordan Sharp recorded 15.
In their overtime victory over Edgewood, Harrison had 22, Kelsey contributed 15, and Sharp added 13 points.
