Commerce ISD acquires three busses, recognizes student’s success

COMMERCE — The Commerce ISD Board of Trustees held their first meeting of the year on Jan. 21 to discuss the overall state of Commerce Independent School District, recognize the efforts of the board on behalf of the students of Commerce High School, and honor those that have gained achievements bringing prestige to the school district, as well as new vehicular purchases made for the benefit of the district.

Members of the board opened the meeting by recognizing the outstanding achievements of members of the community.

Those being recognized included Commerce High School student Amelia Martin, recipient of the 2014 All State Band Award, and the board themselves, who were honored for their efforts on the behalf of members of the school district and the community; and presented with gifts by students of Commerce High School.

Board of Trustees member Ted Oats extended gratitude towards the students on behalf of the board.

“It makes us feel like we’ve done something right,” Oats said. “A lot of you are in your junior or 12th year and you’ve had a lot of people along the way give you guidance and leadership and it’s great to see it pay off.”

The board also discussed the purchase of three new school buses in response to reports of breakdowns in some of the district’s current busses due to a design flaw.

The three new buses are reported to lack the feature found to be the source of the bus breakdowns and are fully functional minus a lack of security camera installation, to be used for student transportation and field trips as necessary.

Purchase of the three buses was approved by the board in a unanimous vote on a payment plan that allows them to be paid off over the course of the next three years, all for the price of a single bus.

Additionally, the board approved the purchase of a Dodge Ram 4x4 truck for the Agriculture Department, which, according to CISD Superintendent Blake Cooper, will be used to “transport kids, animals, supplies, anything that involves moving people and supplies around to agriculture shows or wherever they need to go.”

The meeting concluded with the announcement that incentives for the district are being developed in response to declining enrollment that will be announced in the months to come.
