Chamber of Commerce executive resigns position

COMMERCE — Doug Rohrabaugh, executive director of the Commerce Chamber of Commerce since January 2011, announced his resignation at the chamber’s January board meeting.

He will be returning to his home in the Detroit, Mich. suburbs after graduating from Texas A&M University-Commerce this spring.

Rohrabaugh was selected as the chamber’s executive director while still a student at A&M-Commerce.

After completing his MS degree in political science on May 10, Rohrabaugh, wife Sarah, and daughters Hannah, 4, and Juliana, 1, will leave for Detroit.

“It’s been a fun run here, but it’s time to go home so that our children can get to know their family,” Rohrabaugh said.

Rohrabaugh said he will be looking for position in the Detroit area.

“I loved my time here in Commerce, and I see lots of potential for this city,” Rohrabaugh said. “It has been so rewarding to meet so many great people here and to work with business owners to help them be successful.”

Rohrabaugh came to Commerce because of his involvement in Phi Theta Kappa, a community college honor society, and the reputation of the A&M-Commere political science department.

A&M-Commerce offers scholarships to outstanding PTK students throughout the U.S., and Rohrabaugh had been vice president for the organization’s Michigan region and a member of Michigan’s All-Academic Team.

“Doug has always gone above and beyond the call of duty,” Julie Gentle, current chamber board chairman said. “He has devoted so much of his personal time to the chamber, and he really, truly cares about the chamber and City of Commerce.”

Gentle said Rohrabaugh left a lasting impression on the organization and city.

“I will miss him personally, and his departure is a big loss for the organization,” she said.

Gentle said that a search to identify a successor for Rohrabaugh will begin shortly.
