Rain does not dampen project

COMMERCE — With phase one of a $5 million road construction project completed in December 2013, Commerce Mayor John Ballotti ensures construction is progressing as scheduled.

The plan to overhaul the roads of Commerce was projected to encompass a total length of four years, which includes not only repaving the roads but also replacing the old water pipes underground as well.

Commerce Mayor Ballotti claims that the construction of phase one has been completed despite minor weather setbacks such as the ice storm that occurred in December.

“The construction crosses four years in length and we started the plan on phase one, which was Bois’D’Arc, Neal, Lee, Monroe, and from Stonewall to Live Oak, and that was completed in December,” Ballotti said. “North Monroe’s construction was aided by the Texas Water Board and since it was water board money, we had to wait for them to release the funds to begin the paving and that is coming to a conclusion now. We just have to wait for the weather to warm up to pave.”

The Texas Water Development Board gave $1 million to Commerce to upgrade the aging water infrastructure in Commerce.

As Phase II progresses, Ballotti stressed that until the completion of its repair, Monroe Street is strictly a one way road.

“If you are traveling down Culver, you need to go to Washington Street to go North,” Ballotti said. “Monroe is currently a one lane road travelling south.”

Phase II is underway, aiming to repair the rest of Monroe, Greenville to Walnut, and Stonewall to Brian; and is expected to reach completion by fall 2014, which has not been deterred by the recent rains that Commerce has received.

The completion of phase two will give way to phase three, which is has a projected completion date of sometime in the first half of 2015.

Ballotti stressed his gratitude to the residents of Commerce for their “continued patience in fixing the roads.”
