Lion volleyball coach looks to build upon record-setting year

COMMERCE — Recruiting is easier when you are coming off of back-to-back 20 plus win seasons.

Not to mention when your new assistant coach was recently inducted into the Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame.

According to Head Volleyball Coach Craig Case, not only having new assistant coach Sarah Carthel, but also the addition of assistant coach Morgan Moeller will help solidify the path he envisions for the Lions.

“We’ve been real blessed having her here,” he said. “I’m pretty happy with the direction we’re going.”

Case recently signed three players to the Lions, Kaitlyn Ingle, Lacie Jessup and Shantel Norton, who are district champions and first and second team all-district winners in their respective high schools.

“We’re really heavy in recruiting,” he said. “We’re trying to focus heavily in the Dallas and Houston areas.”

With the addition of Carthel and Moeller, Case said he’s been able to cover more ground in recruiting, and said fans will soon be able to see the difference on the court.

Case said he plans to bring in a total of 10 to 12 new players on the team.

“This is a good opportunity to feel the growth,” he said.

The Lions went 23-9 overall last year and were knocked out by number one seed West Texas A&M in the Lone Star Conference tournament semifinals, who went on to win the tournament.

Case said with the way they have been recruiting, he expects nothing less this year.

“If one or two pieces here fall into place, we’ll be full-steam ahead, ready to go,” he said.

The Lions begin their spring season on March 17.
