Commerce ISD praised by McKinney district

COMMERCE — The Commerce ISD Board of Trustees assembled on Feb. 17 to recognize the accomplishments of certain Commerce ISD students and community members, as well as discuss the progress of initiatives that are being implemented to enrich and improve Commerce as a school district.

The meeting opened with a recognition from the board members of members of the community, which included students Payton Swinson and Cody Benson’s work on a truck bumper, for which they won a blue ribbon in the Fort Worth Stock Show; and representatives of the North East Texas Boys & Girls Club, who recently hosted a dance marathon on the campus of Texas A&M University-Commerce to raise approximately $1500 for the programs of the club benefitting approximate 120 members.

The board discussed updates on several items from their last meeting, including the purchase of three new buses that are now awaiting security camera instillation; and decreased enrollment, which is theorized to have neared a plateau point, as enrollment is now reported to be down by only five students.

A new English as a Second Language (ESL) certification was also discussed for implementation as a requirement for elementary school teachers.

The requirement was unanimously voted in by the board for implementation by the end of the 2014-2015 school year.

The board announced that the district has been personally praised by McKinney Independent School District for the accomplishments of its students in both academia and extracurricular activity and is being studied for the benefit of McKinney ISD.

“It’s exciting to know that a big school like that is willing to come and see what we’re doing,” CISD Superintendant Blake Cooper said. “This was a kudos to our staff. I think that this tells people out there that we’re doing great things at Commerce ISD.”
