Summer reading

Children in the community are being encouraged to keep their minds sharp with reading over the summer in the Commerce Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Program.

This year’s program, titled “A Universe of Stories,” will have plenty of special events for program participants, such as robotics demonstrations, play days and a “Zoofari.”

Children in Pre-K up to 5th grade are eligible to participate in the free program, with registration already started. In addition, there are also special reading challenges for sixth through 12th graders available at the library. Adults are also welcome to participate in the challenge, with prizes available.

Each child that registers for the program will receive a book bag and reading log, as well as a free book to take home after every program. With each visit to the library or a special program, children can also be entered into a drawing for a new bicycle.

Registration began on May 28, and a special registration session will also be held at the upcoming We Care Fair on June 1. Special programs will be held throughout the summer at both Commerce Elementary School and the Commerce Public Library. Preschoolers have a separate registration that begins on June 4.

The CPL Summer Reading Program is funded by the Commerce Rotary Club. The library is located at 1210 Park Street.
