A Hopkins County man has been arraigned on a count of felony theft, for allegedly stealing more than $3,000 last spring.

Whitfield, 30, of Sulphur Springs, entered a plea of not guilty Monday to a charge of theft of property of the value of $1,500 or more, but less than $20,000, during a hearing in the 354th District Court. Judge Richard A. Beacom accepted the plea and scheduled an tentative trial date for Sept. 13.

The indictment returned by the Hunt County grand jury in December alleged Whitfield stole a total of $3,001.25 in currency on April 27, 2009. Whitfield has previous convictions listed on the indictment, two for impersonating a public servant and one for aggravated kidnapping (safe release of victim), all from Fannin County on Jan. 12, 2000.
