Ann Champion received the 2005 Golden Service Award during the Chamber Banquet Thursday night.

Since fall 1984, Champion has made sure those needing hot meals in Commerce have had them delivered each week.

She cooks, shops for groceries, coordinates delivery routes and volunteer drives and frequently drives one of the routes for Meals on Wheels. She is always there to prepare the meals for distribution to the clients. She spends countless hours fulfilling her duties as coordinator of Meals on Wheels.

Champion is receptive to referrals from anyone for services needed and acts immediately on those needs — meeting the emotional as well as physical needs of many.

“She does her job with a smile on her face, joy in her heart and a gracious attitude,” according to one of the nomination forms that was submitted to the Chamber on Champion’s behalf.

“Her work is invaluable and we need to honor her for the smiles she brings to so many,” said another.

“She is truly a silent miracle worker,” said yet a third nomination. “She is humble and works quietly, but enormous good is achieved by her good works.”

She cares about the clients of the program with the same positive attitude she showed hundreds of children as a math teacher at Commerce Middle School. She is very active in her church, where she has been a longtime member.
