A meeting is scheduled for Thursday to answer questions and talk about the qualifications for the allocation of Hotel Tax funds from the city.
Each year, local groups and organizations can apply to receive funds from the City’s Hotel Tax budget. There are requirements that need to be met to receive the funds, and only a set amount is allocated each year.
Last year, $20,000 — the maximum amount discussed — was given to three groups that applied for the fund. The allocations seem to be a hotly contested subject each year, with many organizations vying for the funds. Last year, Mayor Wyman Williams stated during a council meeting: “We deal with millions of dollars in city funds every year, but it seems that these $20,000 receive more scrutiny than most of our money.”
The purpose of the funds is to allocate it to projects that “put heads in beds” as outlined in state law. Applications for the funds have been made available at City Hall, located at 1119 Alamo Street. Applications are due on June 4.
The informational meeting is scheduled for May 16 at City Hall at 3 p.m.
