A local charity is hosting one of their biggest events of the year to raise funds and receive toy donations to provide families in need with a merry Christmas this year.
Commerce Lil’ Angels is hosting its third “Christmas in July” toy drive on July 22. Since beginning in 2017 the event has become one of the biggest donation efforts for the organization for the year.
Anne Mills with Lil’ Angels said that the toy drive has helped boost the number of families the group can assist drastically.
“Christmas in July has significantly increased our donations and has also helped to increase our visibility in the community,” Mills said. “People were incredibly generous last year, and we were able to provide approximately 500 children with presents for Christmas.”
But Mills wants people to be aware that its not just toys the organization is seeking, but other items for older children as well.
“We want to make sure the older children are not forgotten,” Mills said.
The event, which has the theme of “Burlap and Bluebonnets,” will be held on July 22 at MUGS on the Square, located at 1123 Main Street in downtown Commerce from 6 to 8 p.m. The night will feature many activities for children, including snowman building, bluebonnet Christmas ornaments, and a song and story time with Stephen and Kourtney Clayton. MUGS will be serving pecan pie, Texas chocolate sheet cake, pralines and coffee.
There will also be gift card giveaways every 15 minutes. In addition, Los Mochis Mexican restaurant, located at 1600 Lee Street in Commerce, will donate 10 percent of their proceeds from 5 to 9 p.m. the night of the event to Commerce Lil’ Angels.
Lil’ Angels asks guests to bring either an unwrapped toy for a child or a gift for a teenager, such as jewelry, cosmetics, sheets and more.
