Six powerlifters from Commerce High School had strong performances at the regional meet last weekend, with one lifter qualifying for the state meet later this month.

Andrea Barrett finished in second place in the 181 lb. weight class with a total of 850 lbs. This mark was good enough to qualify her for the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association State Meet, which will be held March 15 in Waco.

Also competing this weekend were Brooklyn Matthews and Alexis Morgan, who finished fifth and eight place, respectively, in the 132 lb. weight class, Arleen Depich, who placed eighth in the 148 lb. weight class, and Elajah and Alyssa Fugitt, who placed eighth and 10th in the 181 lb. weight class, respectively.

CHS lifter Sydney Martinez was also set to compete in regionals, but had to miss the meet due to an injury.

Head Coach John McSheffery said that “The girls competed very well in Fairfield… I am really proud of Andrea’s accomplishment and excited she will be representing Commerce at the state meet.”

Next up is the boys’ turn at regionals, with Anthony Peak, Anthony Cork and Roman Colsten competing on Friday in Malakoff.
