Texas A&M University-Commerce’s women closed the gap on No. 4 nationally-ranked West Texas A&M but still couldn’t catch the Lady Buffs on Saturday in the Field House.
West Texas A&M, which beat the Lions 100-73 at Canyon on Jan. 24, claimed the rematch 88-73 to go 22-2 for the season and 13-1 in Lone Star Conference play. The Lions dropped to 13-11 and 7-7.
The Lions hung tough for the first 17 minutes as the lead changed hands six times before West Texas A&M stretched the advantage out to 46-33 at halftime. West Texas A&M kept the lead at double digits for the rest of the game.
Sasha Watson, who was 10-of-13 from the field and 7-of-8 from the line, led the Lady Buffs with 29 points and four steals.
Teammate Chontiquah White, who made all 13 of her free throws, sank 24 points and handed out four assists. Ariel Robertson chipped in 12 points.
Artaejah Gay topped the Lions with 16 points, while Gabby Scott tossed in 15 off five 3-pointers. Ashlee Johnson added nine points, while Princess Davis, Abigail Leaupepe-Tele and Zenobia Winbush all pitched in seven points for the Lion, who shot 46.4 percent from the field and 58.3 percent from the line.
