Seminar on safety in the church approaches

The Commerce Journal

COMMERCE — Jimmy Meeks, who has spent 40 years in the ministry and 33 years as a police officer, will present a free church-safety seminar at First Baptist Church, 1401 Washington in Commerce at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

On Sunday the film “Faith Under Fire,” will be shown at the church at 6 p.m. The movie is based on the  true story of the 1980 shooting at First Baptist Church in Daingerfield. Admission is free. Also, the church will conduct a special service at 10:50 a.m. Sunday honoring all First Responders with Meeks bringing the message.

Meeks points out that most people think of a church as a safe haven; however, since 1999 more than 450 people have died a violent death while on church or faith-based property. That is higher than the number of violent deaths that have occurred at schools during that same time period.

Churches need to be aware of these crimes, and take the necessary precautions to prevent them.

Meeks has traveled around the country since 1999 helping churches prepare for such violent attacks. He has issued an invitation for local officers to join him at these events.
