Tigers defeat Alba-Golden, stay in playoff hunt

COMMERCE — The Commerce High School boys basketball team recorded two huge district wins recently over Edgewood and Alba-Golden, giving them a 13-13 overall record for the year and strengthening their district record to 6-4.

On Jan. 25, the Tigers used a 23-6 fourth quarter to defeat Edgewood 50-44. Senior Kavrin Massey led the team with 16 points. Sophomore D’Lance Sharp added 11, and senior Buck Wilson had eight.

Tuesday night, Commerce dropped Alba-Golden to 1-9 in district play with a 62-40 victory. Once again, Massey led the team with 20 points. The Tigers outscored the Panthers 21-7 in the second quarter and never looked back.

The Tigers are in the hunt for a playoff spot with Winnsboro (8-2), Edgewood (7-3) and Quitman (6-4).

The Commerce High School girls basketball team defeated Alba-Golden 46-40 Tuesday night to bring their district record to 8-4. Taite McBee led the team with 19 points.

Morgan Doolin contributed nine, and Kelsey Mouer added six. McBee and Doolin led the Lady Tigers with six rebounds a piece. Kadija Pannell added five rebounds. Mouer led the team with Lady Tigers with five assists.

Commerce will travel to Lone Oak to take on the Buffaloes Feb. 1.
