Commerce High School student Breanna Westbrook cares for veterans.
Her recent scholarship award from the Commerce American Legion Post 1 proves it.
Westbrook accepted a $500 scholarship from the post to attend Texas A&M University-Commerce in the fall.
Jack Roberts, a member of the post, said this year’s candidates were top notch.
“We probably had the best group we’ve ever had, and Breanna came on top,” he said.
Westbrook’s passion for helping soldiers stemmed when her brother returned from the military.
In the seventh grade she began making blankets for soldiers staying at the Bonham VA Hospital.
“I felt that all the people who risked their lives to keep us safe, I wanted to do something for them,” she said.
Speaking to a room full of veterans, Westbrook said she wanted to keep helping the veterans in any capacity she could.
According to Post 1 Commander Buddy Gregg, her work with soldiers helped solidify her as a top choice.
“I am very proud of you for that,” he said.
