Don Carthel out at West Texas A&M

CANYON — Looks like there isn't going to be a "Carthel Bowl" after all.

West Texas A&M University announced Thursday evening that head coach Don Carthel will be relieved of his coaching duties. Don is the winningest coach in West Texas A&M history and turned a team that had won seven games in four years into a perennial Divsion II powerhouse.

New Texas A&M University-Commerce football coach Colby Carthel is Don's son, and he spent the last seven years as a defensive coordinator for his father. Colby's move to fellow Lone Star Conference school A&M-Commerce  sparked excitment for the two head coaches' first meeting on opposite sidelines on Sept. 21.

Now it looks like that meeting won't happen. West Texas A&M administrators didn't give a reason for Carthel's departure, only thanked the coach and noted that assistant head coach Mike Nesbitt will serve as the interim head coach.
