The Commerce Journal

COMMERCE — The Meals on Wheels Auction will be held at the Texas A&M University-Commerce Rayburn Student Center on Oct. 1 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., according to MOW President Luann Huffman.

Proceeds from ticket sales, which are $5 a person, and raffle tickets, which are $1 each, will be combined with the auction proceeds to benefit the Meals on Wheels program. Light refreshments will be served throughout the evening.

The drawing for the raffle winner entitling him or her to a $200 voucher for groceries will be held during the evening. Door prizes will also be announced. Members of the MOW board will contact their patrons throughout the month of September to gather contributions and monetary gifts to the auction.

Individuals interested in purchasing tickets can contact Huffman at 903-886-3368 or Kathy Hill at 903-456-1949.

Officers for the organization are Luann Huffman, president; Janet Peek, president-elect; Kathy Hill, treasurer; and Sharon Smith, secretary. 17 board members oversee the organization’s mission of providing three meals per week to shut-ins in Commerce.

The food is planned, purchased and prepared by Ann Champion, Opal Pannell, and volunteer Frances Miller. Community and church members prepare “Casseroles for Christ,” which hare used for Friday lunches. They are taken to the First United Methodist Church and picked up by Charlie Smith, who delivers them to Linda Muller Center. The meals are then prepared and readied for delivery by the driving volunteers.

“It is most rewarding to be involved in the auction preparations and implementation,” Helon Razniak, one of the auction chairs, said. “We are always excited about the auction items as the board members deliver them to the auction site at the A&M-Commerce student center.”

Auction chairs are Razniak, Kay Webber, Peek and June Dunn. All board members are responsible for their individual display designs in the ballrooms of the student center.
