Police to increase patrols after two incidents

COMMERCE — Two incidents last week in Commerce should have residents on alert when walking through poorly-lit areas, according to Commerce Police Chief Kerry Crews.

Saturday afternoon, a 15-year-old female was walking down the north end of Monroe Street near the Live Oak intersection, when a white SVU pulled up next to her. A white male stepped out of the car, talked to her, and tried to get her to get into the vehicle with him, according to Crews. The female then ran away. The police are still looking for the car.

Friday night, a female reported that she was robbed by three suspects who were driving a white truck near the intersection of Campbell and Walnut streets. While the victim has not provided a consistent story on exactly where she was at the time of the attack, Crews said that the suspects allegedly brandished some kind of weapon.

At this time there is no evidence connecting the two incidents, Crews said, pointing to the separate vehicle descriptions.

“With both of [the incidents] being close to campus and not that far apart, even though we think they’re unrelated, use caution when walking by yourself,” Crews said. “I wouldn’t walk in areas that aren’t well lit, or without another individual.”

According to Crews, CPD will increase patrols in the area. The University Police Department is aware of the incidents as well, and sent out two PAWS alerts to subscribers. Lieutenant Jason Bone said that UPD will increase patrols in the area as well, and that all of the university’s police officers have been given descriptions of the suspects in both cases.
