Academic achievements recognized during board meeting

COMMERCE — Commerce Middle School math students are the best in Hunt County, according to the Sumdog math competition held earlier this year.

The math competition was held county-wide where students had to answer a combined number of more than 45,000 questions given them.

Nine of the top 10 students were from CMS.

They, along with dozens of other CISD students, were recognized for their UIL and academic performance during the May 23 CISD School Board meeting.

The board recognized more than 30 students, including the Commerce High School salutatorian and valedictorian, Kaitlyn Mulkey and JoAnn Jang.

“They are two sweet young ladies that I have gotten to know over the past years,” Blake Cooper, superintendent of CISD said. “They are academic excellence at its best.”

The Commerce Lady Tiger softball team was also recognized at the meeting and were given a framed picture that will go up at CHS in their honor.

Members of the Meat Judging team were recognized for their various accomplishments throughout the year, including competing at the state level.

Cooper said recognizing the accomplishments of his students is the best part of his job.

“This is why we’re here,” he said.
