Texas A&M University-Commerce President Dr. Dan Jones has announced that the university is launching a nationwide search for a new director of intercollegiate athletics. Former AD Carlton Cooper was not given a new contract in July after five years with A&M-Commerce and was officially no longer with A&M-Commerce as of Aug. 31. The university has not released information regarding their decision to not employ Cooper.
“Carlton Cooper is no longer employed by Texas A&M University-Commerce,” Interim Executive Director of Marketing Communications Lisa Martinez said in response to requests by The Commerce Journal in mid September. “There are ongoing legal issues which prevent us from providing any additional information.”
Judy Sackfield has served as A&M-Commerce’s interim athletic director since July, and will reportedly continue to do so until the university hires a new AD.
“She has provided stability and her leadership is deeply appreciated,” Jones said in a press release.
Sackfield will resume her full-time responsibilities as Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator for the university upon the arrival of the new athletic director, according to the press release. Jones said the university will announce the selection of the new athletics director in the spring of 2013.
The search committee will be headed up by A&M-Commerce Chief of Staff Alicia Currin and Director of Honors Advising and Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Eric Gruver. The 15-member committee will provide Jones with a recommendation in early January.
“The search for our next athletic director will be a thorough and transparent process,” Jones said. “The successful candidate will be an individual of impeccable character who is dedicated to the development of the student athlete and committed to success of the program.”
