Small Business Saturday around the corner

COMMERCE — There are many iconic items associated with Thanksgiving: turkey, football and afternoon naps. Recently, shopping holidays like Cyber Monday and Black Friday have sprung up around the holiday as people prepare for the Christmas shopping season.

But there is one shopping holiday that is both beneficial to the community and the shoppers themselves: Small Business Saturday.

Begun in 2010 by American Express, Small Business Saturday helps local businesses promote their products while allowing shoppers to enjoy Thanksgiving with their families.

“It’s important because it allows the citizens to become more familiar with the services in the city," Dr. Velvete Womack, owner of Fire & Ice Massage, said. “Many people get used to going out of town and miss what’s available to them in Commerce.”

Not shopping on Thanksgiving also helps refocus the holiday, according to Womack.

“It’s a move out of greed and into grace,” she said.

Shopping locally not only helps build small businesses, according to Womack. It also helps strengthen the city’s tax base through sales taxes.

“The taxes help the council do more things for the city, and shopping outside of Commerce takes away from the community tax base and puts that money into other communities.”

A variety of local businesses will be participating in Small Business Saturday and providing sales or specials, including Affordable Furniture, Funk Attic, Fix & Feed, My Sister’s Closet and El Charro.
