Mary Jo Leslie

COMMERCE — Funeral services for Mary Jo Leslie, 90, of Commerce are at 10 a.m. today, Oct. 17, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church of Commerce with the Rev. Valarie Englert officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery in Cooper.

Delta Funeral Home of Cooper is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Leslie was born July 31, 1923, in Corpus Christi to Roberta and H.R. Chesnut. She graduated from Cooper High School in 1940 and attended East Texas State Teachers College, now Texas A&M University-Commerce. There she met her future husband, Gene Leslie, in 1941.

She supported her mother while working at the Draft Board for three years during World War II.

In 1944 Mary  married Gene Leslie in Cooper.

A longtime resident of Cooper and Commerce, Mrs. Leslie was a bookkeeper for their family businesses, Leslie Lumber Company and Gene Leslie Building Company.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and Ted Oats and Elaine and Dale Stotts, all of Commerce; grandchildren Leslie and Kevin Williams of Rowlett, Jeff and Dana Oats of Rowlett, Kristi Stotts of Austin and Jenna and Jason Leiker of Austin; and great-grandchildren Shane Williams, Dylan Buksik and Dayton, all of Rowlett.

Her parents and her husband preceded her in death.
