The Commerce City Pool has been shut down for the year, according to Commerce Parks and Recreation Director Ricky Harris. A main pump went out, allowing groundwater to get into the pool.

“That pump was actually moved from the old pool that was built in the 1950s to the current pool, which was constructed in 1985,” Harris said. “In order to replace it, we would need to have someone fabricate it, which would take a couple weeks. It would take another couple weeks to get the right level of chemicals into the pool, and by that time the swim season would be over.”

Harris confirmed that individuals who paid for swim lessons at the Commerce pool will be reimbursed. The exact fate of the pool will be up to the Commerce City Council.

“They will make some determinations about how they want to move forward, because that is an aging pool,” he said. “The city council will have to determine whether they want to put the money into this pool to fix it, or whether they want to go another route.”

Commerce City Manager Marc Clayton said that it was premature to say that the city might shutdown the pool permanently.

“We will do a re-evaluation and I need a structural engineer to come look at pool,” he said. “The pump is out and it’s a major expenditure, so we won’t buy that at this time. I will work over the next several weeks to get proposal together for city council. It is an old structure, and it will take some repair.”
