Lions welcome West Texas A&M to Memorial Stadium

COMMERCE — The final game of the 2012 Texas A&M University-Commerce football season, and perhaps the last one with Guy Morriss as head coach, will begin Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Lions (1-8, 1-6 LSC) have had another frustrating year, and their season isn’t getting any easier. West Texas A&M (8-2, 6-2 LSC) has been a force in the conference, averaging more than 40 points a game while allowing only 336 yards per game, second least in the LSC.

Senior running back Khiry Robinson is second in the LSC with 905 yards and nine touchdowns, while junior Dustin Vaughan is leading the conference with 3,274 through the air and 33 passing touchdowns. A&M-Commerce’s fourth-ranked defense, led by senior linebacker Danny Mason (100 total tackles) will have their work cut out for them.

The Buffs’ junior linebacker Taylor McCuller (110 tackles) will lead the second-ranked defense against a Lions’ offense that struggled last week against Eastern New Mexico, only scoring three points. Senior quarterback Kevin Vye has been mediocre for the Lions, recording only 723 passing, two touchdowns and five interceptions in six games. A&M-Commerce continues to struggle on the ground, although they had one of their best outputs of the year with 94 against the Greyhounds last week. Wide receiver Garrett Smith (46 receptions, 530 yards) has proven to be a reliable target, despite the midseason quarterback change.

The Lions have gone 2-17 in the past two years, and 10-30 in Guy Morriss’ four years as a head coach. A&M-Commerce has only won one game against Texas teams in that span, and zero at home. West Texas A&M has won four straight games against the Lions.
