Fort Worth — A former Texas A&M University-Commerce All-American football player who is in the university's athletic Hall-of-Fame was beaten to death inside of his church Monday morning with an electric guitar, according to the Fort Worth Star Telegram.
Rev. Danny Kirk Sr., pastor of Greater Sweethome Missionary Baptist in Fort Worth, was attacked by Derrick Birdow, 33, according to WFAA/Channel 8. Kirk played football at Marlin High School before attending and playing linebacker for what was then East Texas State, eventually making it to the Seattle Seahawks' training camp. Kirk was inducted into the A&M-Commerce Athletics Hall-of-Fame in 2010 with the rest of the 1980 Lions football team. He was 53.
According to the Telegram, Birdrow crashed his car into the church and then proceeded to the music room, grabbed a guitar, and started hitting Kirk. He was still swinging when the police arrived. The police Tasered Birdrow, who was then taken to a police car in handcuffs. When the police returned to the car later, Birdrow was dead.
