University hosts soccer, volleyball camps

COMMERCE — Texas A&M University-Commerce athletics continue to host camps and recruiting classes for the local athletes, giving them an opportunity to interact with the university’s athletes and coaches.

Soccer camp started Monday and will finish Friday on the university’s intramural fields behind the soccer field. Since the soccer field is currently getting new grass, head coach Neil Piper had to find other arrangements and is pleased with how effective the camp is on the fields.

“I didn’t promote camp as much this year because I have never hosted it on this field before, but I like how it is going out here,” Piper said.

This year, approximately 60 campers are attending the camp from 9 a.m. to noon. The age of the campers ranges from elementary students to incoming freshman for the university team. According to Piper, next year will be an opportunity to expand the camp, with the younger kids on the intramural fields with their staff and the older kids on the soccer field with him.

A&M-Commerce volleyball Coach Craig Case will host a five-day volleyball camp, beginning July 1. The camp is open to middle school and high school volleyball girls.

The two age groups will split off with different staff from 9 a.m. 9 p.m. for different sets of drills and come together at the end of the day for activities. Every year, the camp opens with a pool party at the Morris Recreation Center after the first day and a camp party in The Club of the Rayburn Student Center the second night.

There are currently 78 girls registered for the camp but registration stays open up to the start. This year there will be different staff members and some different drills introduced.

“For some girls, it is their fifth year at camp, so I changed some of the drills so we’re not always doing the same thing,” Case said.  

Staff will be comprised of the whole volleyball squad at A&M-Commerce, including the incoming freshman. Each player is given 10 player cards at the beginning of camp with their stats, similar to traditional baseball cards, to hand out to campers as part of the ongoing “get to know the player” competition that culminates at the end with a prize for the winner.

“I want the kids to have a chance to have fun and get to know each other while getting a feel for what we do,” Case said. “A lot of recruits come to these camps and it is a good chance for them to check out our program.”
