Lady Tigers coach looks to build on success of softball program

COMMERCE — The Commerce High School Lady Tigers deep playoff run came to an end on May 17 as the Tigers lost two close games against number one ranked Pilot Point in the regional semifinals.

The Tigers lost both pitching duels 1-0 and 3-2 at Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant.

Lady Tigers Head Coach Jeff Davidson said although Commerce fell in the best-of-three sereies,  he’s proud of the way the girls played against Pilot Point.

“We played good defense in both games,” he said. “The hard part was waking up and realizing you were that close.”

Davidson said there were some missed opportunities during both games, especially in the first game, where the girls had runners on second and third with no one out but couldn’t knock in a run.

“We had a couple of chances but we just couldn’t come up,” he said.

In the short time he’s been head coach, Davidson has taken a program that has never seen a district championship to two consecutive playoff appearances and a district championship this season.

Davidson said the girls took the game as just another chance to prove they could contend with the top team in the state, and it showed with how they held their own in the two games.

“It didn’t phase us one bit,” he said. “We went four rounds deep and we wanted to keep going.”

Davidson said the girls received a lot of support from the community that helped inspire them to win.

“There were a lot of people from Commerce at the games,” he said. “There was great support and great atmosphere.”

With seven of the 13 players seniors this year, Davidson said they will be hard to replace, but since the program has turned around, he’s sure more talent and desire to win will come soon.

“We’ve got six coming back who know what it tastes like to win and know what it takes to get there,” he said. “Year in and year out we want to be a playoff team.”
