Changing the face of A&M-Commerce athletics

COMMERCE — In the few months Ryan Ivey has served as Athletic Director for Texas A&M University-Commerce, many changes have been made as to how it conducts business.

Ivey said things will continue to change as he brings community involvement into the department.

To begin, Ivey has set a minimum number of community service hours the department as a whole must complete each year.

“We have 2,000 hours of community service as our minimun,” he said, adding that the department recently adopted a portion of Highway 24, just north of Commerce. “We will be working with Commerce, Sulphur Springs and Greenville. And we’ll be helping with the Boys and Girls Club. Community service is something we’re passionate about.”

Ivey said he wants the department to be more involved in the community.

“We want people to know that we’re out in the community,” he said.

The department is currently on a Lion Safari Tour, where they travel all over the state, speaking about A&M-Commerce athletics to anyone with an ear.

Ivey said that it will not be a one time thing.

“We will have the safari tour each year to reach out to all of Texas,” he said. “We plan on having a presence in the DFW and Greenville area.”

The department is close to a deal to put up billboards along Interstate 30 and is working with the Greenville Herald-Banner and Dallas Morning News to make their presence known.

Ivey has implemented a fan rewards program to help encourage attendance to the games.

“It puts the fans first,” he said. “We are actively seeking to help fans.”

During the football season, the department will host different theme nights each game, including a partnership with the city to have a Bois D’ Arc Blue Out during the Bois D’ Arc Bash in September.

Ivey said the new implementations, along with the new marketing way is an “Opportunity for us to reach out to fans. We need to be an entertainment destination for northeast Texas.”
