COMMERCE — Tonight the Commerce High School Lady Tigers Softball team will play Pilot Point, the number one ranked team in the state.

But to Head Coach Jeff Davidson, it’ll be just another game.

“It’s still another game,” he said. “It’s their best against our best.”

The Lady Tigers play Pilot Point in Mt. Pleasant at Northeast Texas Community College at 6 p.m., again at 8:30 p.m. and if need be, Saturday at 10 a.m. in a best two out of three series.

The Lady Tigers recently beat the number nine ranked team 6-4 in a one game series, so Davidson said the team will continue the trend and move past the Semi-Finals opponent.

“We’re looking to the challenge as a great opportinity,” he said. “It will take a total team effort and we’re looking forward to it.”

In the week leading up to the games, Davidson has changed the practice schedule some and focused more on the mental aspect of the game.

“I’m training the mind more than the physical,” he said. “We’re making sure we’re staying sharp and staying healthy.”

This is the furthest the team has ever been, and Davidson said the girls are understandably excited but are taking it week by week.

Davidson said the key to the team winning is staying fresh and sharp throughout the week and moving runners during the game.

“We’ve got to move runners and we have to score runs,” he said. “We know that we can compete with them. I’m confident in our ability.”

Davidson said the team has had some tough games this year, and said he knows the girls will play well on Friday.

“This is a good group; a special group,” he said. “As long as we’ve got an opportunity, we’ve got a chance.”
