DIAZ MAKES ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM AS LIONS TIE FOR FOURTH IN POTTSBORO

POTTSBORO — Junior Sara Diaz concluded the top tournament of her collegiate career, matching her 7-over 79 in round one to post a 14-over 158, finishing fifth at the 2013 Texoma Chevy Dealers Lion Intercollegiate at Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro. Diaz sparked A&M-Commerce who tied for fourth among the 21-team field with an 81-over 657.

Diaz, who tied her previous career-best by placing 11th at last month’s World Golf Invitational, notched the first top-10 finish of her career, shooting a pair of 79s and breaking out of a six-way tie for third-place. It is the third top-five finish on the season for A&M-Commerce.

Junior teammate Chelsea McCoy came on strong as well, logging the low round of the day for the Lions with a 6-over 78, posting the first top-10 of her A&M-Commerce career. After notching an 82 on Monday, McCoy’s 78 gave her a 16-over 160, tying for eighth place in the individual standings.

Chantry McMahan carded a 12-over 84, giving her a two-day total of 23-over 167 and tying for 25th in the individual standings. Ali Leasor and Holly Jenkins rounded out the scorecard as Leasor notched a 28-over 172 while Jenkins finished with a 45-over 189.

A&M-Commerce entered the day tied for third in the team standings with a 40-over 328 and remained consistent, logging a 41-over 329 in round two to finish with the 329. But in yet another example of why every stroke counts, the Lions finished two shots back of third-place Colorado State-Pueblo (79-over 655) and just three strokes behind runner-up Arkansas-Fort Smith (78-over 654). It is the best finish of the season for A&M-Commerce and its second top-five team showing of the year after placing fifth at the Angelo State Concho River Classic back in September.

Lubbock Christian ran away with the team title, posting a 65-over 641 and besting the Lions of Arkansas Fort-Smith by 13 shots to capture the championship. Henderson State’s Kendall Earp won the individual title with a 9-over 153 and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Lubbock Christian’s Anna Schopp and Mariah Montoya, Colorado State-Pueblo’s Dominique Dinallo and Diaz of A&M-Commerce.

After taking a little time off for spring break, A&M-Commerce is back in action next week, traveling to Wichita Falls for the Midwestern State Mustang Invitational on March 18 and 19. Stay tuned to LionAthletics.com for full results as they become available.
