Howe defeats Tigers

COMMERCE — The Howe Bulldogs controlled most of the game to spoil the Commerce Tiger homecoming with a 26-6 victory on Friday night.

Pre-game ceremonies saw senior Isaiah Martinez crowned homecoming king and Grayson Chilton crowned queen.

The good news soon faded as Howe took a two-score lead on a 13-play, 71-yard drive capped by a 4-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Joaquin Lopez and a three-play drive with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Lopez to Freshman Tyler Gresham, both in the first quarter. Both extra point tries failed and Commerce closed the gap with three minutes left in the half with a 59-yard touchdown run by junior Darien Redd.

The extra kick bounced off the upright to make it 12-6 Howe with 2:53 left in the half.

But the Bulldogs made the most of the time left by mounting a seven-play, 69-yard drive topped with a 25-yard touchdown catch by sophomore Michael Kehrer to make the halftime score 18-6 Howe.

The Bulldogs held the Tigers scoreless in the second half and ended Commerce’s most promising drive with an interception that set up a six-play, 61-yard drive with a 37-yard scoring run by junior Anthony Hawthorne with 4:20 left to play in the game.

Commerce’s ensuing drive was ended short with another pick and Howe let the clock run to take the win.

It was the first District 6-2A win for Howe, as the Bulldogs go to 3-5 on the season and 1-3 in district.

Commerce falls to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in district play.

Next week the Tigers face Farmersville on the road.
