After a successful trip to the Texas State Fair on Oct. 17, Commerce Tourism Director Sherry Johnson has more events planned to ring in the new year for Commerce residents.
On Jan. 17, the tourism department will be taking a bus trip to Chocktaw Casino in Durant, Okla.
Residents who sign up for the free trip will also receive $10 worth of free slot play and $7 off of the buffet at the casino.
Johnson is partnering with Greenville on the event and will have a bus pickup time in Commerce in front of the Farmers Market at 9:15 a.m., and in front of Staples in Greenville at 9:45 a.m.
The event is for people over the age of 18 and Johnson said the bus will leave the casino at 6 p.m.
Another event Johnson said she is looking forward to is the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo on Feb. 7.
“People need to let me know by Jan. 2 to get good seats,” she said.
Johnson is also partnering with the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department to go off to see the Wizard on March 27.
Residents will be bussed to the Music Hall at Fair Park to see the Wizard of Oz play at 7:30 p.m.
Johnson has a committee of residents who meet to brainstorm ideas to attract people to Commerce.
“On my committee is Sue Davis, Carolyn Trezevant, Jim Latham, Jack Gray and Wyman Williams,” she said. “We’ve got some projects in the works there.”
A fund-raising event Johnson has planned as part of the committee is to have lions painted that can be found throughout the city in the near future.
Currently the committee has plans for, pending approval, murals to be painted downtown on the square, and a museum downtown that will be filled with artifacts and tidbits from the history of Texas A&M University-Commerce.
“We just want to put Commerce on the map for art and music,” Johnson said.
