Larger facility needed for Commerce Food Pantry

COMMERCE — Dennis White, board president of Commerce Food Pantry Inc., expressed his thoughts on a growing need for a new facility to operate the Commerce Food Pantry during the Jan. 21 Commerce City Council meeting.

“We serve 45-50 family units every week. That’s almost 200 individuals per month,” he said. “We are flat running out of room.”

The pantry is currently open every Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church on Monroe Street.

White asked the city to consider finding a larger facility capable of handling the increase, and also the capability of housing refrigerators for donations of perishable goods such as beef and chicken.

“We need your help,” he said. “We’re running out of storage and need refrigeration units.”

White added that they would have one refrigerator guaranteed contingent on securing a location large enough.

White said the facility would need to be at least 1,000 square feet.

“If there is any possible way for you to help me out, I would love to work,” he said.

The item will be placed on the agenda for the February Commerce City Council meeting for further discussion.
